In your efforts to make your home a green home, you’ll run across a lot of information. One simple step towards green living can be decorating your home with organic fabrics.

For decades, organic fabric meant wrapping your home in burlap or something equally as unpleasant. Luckily organic today is as luxurious as you want it to be. From the softest bamboo to the crispest linens, organic textiles have come a long way.

So, just what are organic fabrics?

Any fabric that is made from naturally grown plants. Organic fabrics are not genetically-engineered in any way. They do not get sprayed with chemical pesticides, which makes them safer for the farmer and the consumer. They also do not grow with the help of synthetic fertilizers. Any dyes used in the fabric are also all natural and non-toxic.

In making conscious decision about the fabric you use to decorate your home, you’ll often get higher-quality fabric and make less of a carbon footprint in the process. Here are some of the choices you’ll find in a search for organic fabric:

Organic Cotton

Cotton is the most commonly available form of organic fabric. It’s also widely available in its inorganic form and is the one of the most pesticide-sprayed crop in the world. So, make absolutely sure you’re buying organic before you purchase. Organic cotton is not only better for the environment, it’s also a higher-quality fabric. Inorganic cotton goes through a lot of chemical treatment, which weakens the fibers significantly. Organic cotton is chemical-free and will last much, much longer. Meaning that the amazingly soft sheets you purchased for the guest room, will stay amazing for years to come.

Hemp

While hemp has gotten a bad rap for being related to marijuana, it has only trace, unusable amounts of THC. This natural textile is beneficial to the environment. It produces a lot of oxygen for its size and grows very quickly. It actually helps remove toxins from the soil it grows in, and it can grow almost anywhere without help from chemicals. If you’re creating an organic home design, then using hemp for curtains is a good idea. Hemp-based cloth reflects the sun’s UV rays much better than most other fabrics.

Bamboo

Developed only in the last decade, bamboo fabric continues to grow in popularity. Bamboo grows very quickly, so like hemp, it is a sustainable fabric. It’s also extremely soft, has anti-bacterial properties, is one of the most water-absorbent textiles available and is less likely to cause allergic reactions than many other natural fibers. Overall, bamboo fabric may turn out to be the most versatile of all the organic fabrics. However, it’s important to note that not all bamboo is organic, some companies use chemicals to bleach the natural-colored fibers. Don’t get caught by the green washers, always check to make sure that the fabric you’re buying isn’t just sustainable, it’s organic too.

Whether you’re considering reupholstering your furniture, putting in new drapes, or finding a better blanket for your bed, the benefits of using organic fabric can’t be over-estimated. It’s a simple step towards green living that will improve your impact on the environment, improve the quality of your home, and may also improve your health.

Sarah's Fresh & Natural Chocolae Milk Shake

It has been a long hot summer here in California. Chocolate is one of the hottest selling items at our shop. The summer desert heat makes it really hard to keep our normal large selection of gourmet chocolates and confections. But, with Fall creeping in it is making me think more and more about the wonderful cacao and the fabulous treats that can be made with it. Well, today I came across the blog of a wonderful lady Sarah Britton who is the owner of http://www.MyNewRoots.blogspot.com.
Please check out her blog for various other interesting recipes. Below is her yummie recipe for a pure chocolate milk shake made with all natural ingredients and lots of love.

My dad believes that chocolate milkshakes fix just about any problem. Boy troubles? Chocolate milkshake. Bad day at work? Chocolate milkshake. I’ll never forget my disastrous 15th birthday party where he successfully pacified an entire room of disgruntled-drama-queen adolescent girls with chocolate milkshakes. God bless that patient man and his blender.
He makes them thick and rich with all the classic ingredients that I have long renounced, but I gotta say that I miss their undeniable consoling qualities now and again. They are just so good, and they somehow manage to put things in perspective every time.
Well dad, I’ve improved upon your classic, and it not only tastes like “a liquid brownie” (according to the hubby), but it’s totally raw, and boasts more antioxidants than a salad buffet. How can this be?! It’s all thanks to cacao.

What makes cacao a superfood?
Cacao has been given the illustrious label of “superfood” because it is an incredibly rich source of minerals and antioxidants. In fact, according to the ORAC scale (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) it contains more antioxidants per gram than goji berries, blueberries, prunes, raisins, red wine, and green tea. This rating system was developed by the United States Department of Agriculture to measure the effectiveness of antioxidants to absorb free radicals that cause cell and tissue damage. The higher the ORAC score, the higher the level of antioxidants present in the food. You can get a copy of the ORAC scale here.

So does that mean I can eat chocolate instead of fruit?
No. Eating a bowl of raw cacao nibs is not better for you than a basket of blueberries. Although cacao is very nutritious and incredibly yummy, like anything it should be consumed in moderation. Cacao contains two controversial elements; theobromine, a powerful stimulant which affects our nervous system and oxalic acid, which inhibits calcium absorption. Eating a couple of these milkshakes a week is certainly not going to do you any harm (in fact, for most of us it would be doing a world of good), but this should not be an everyday indulgence. Be a responsible health nut for crying out loud!

The difference between cacao and cocoa
Let’s get one thing straight people: cacao is not cocoa. They make look very similar, smell the same, feel the same, they are even spelled almost the same way, but they are worlds apart when it comes to nutrition. It all comes back to raw versus cooked foods, which I have talked about several times here on the site - when you heat any food above 40 °C (104 °F), you destroy many of the fragile enzymes and vitamins that are contained inside, thus rendering a once very nutrient-dense food, just a tasty one. It happens. That is not to say that cooked food isn’t good for you because it definitely has its place in the diet, but raw chocolate versus a Hershey bar? There’s simply no comparison.

If you’re in the market for some raw cacao (and you really should be on your way to the health food store immediately after reading this), please only purchase certified organic raw cacao to ensure that you are getting the most nutrition for you money. If you do not, well, you’ll also be chuggin’ down a whole lot of chemicals from irradiation and pesticides, which are standard practice in growing cacao beans.

Okay, without further ado, here is the Raw Chocolate Milkshake Miracle that has turned breakfast time into a ridiculous kitchen dance party delight. Food like this convinces me that God loves us and she wants us to be happy.

Raw Chocolate Milkshake Miracle
Ingredients:
• ¼ cup hemp seeds (or use soaked almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds etc.)
• 2 heaping Tbsp. raw cacao powder
• 1 Avocado
• 1 very large frozen banana (or 2 small)
• 2 Tbsp. raw honey, agave, or maple syrup
• dash sea salt
• ¾ - 1 cup water
• 4 ice cubes

Directions:
1. Blend all the ingredients together; add water to thin if desired. It’s a thick one, folks!
And although the urge to chug may take over, don’t forget to “chew” your milkshake for better digestion! Very important.

Dad, I know you love your ice cream, milk, and chocolate sauce combo, but when I come back to Canada, this is the first thing I am going to make for you. If my milkshakes don’t fix any problem we can come up with, nothing will. The only thing we’ll cry about is seeing the bottom of the glass.

Look What We Found!!....Oh how I LOVE Eco-Friendly Products.

A silk necktie twines around opulent faux pearls to form this elegant necklace.

The graceful, eco-friendly necklace is made from a vintage silk necktie and vintage 50s era faux pearls from Japan.

The silk tie weaves a nuance of mystery into the classic sophistication of the pearl necklace. The Lady Industrialist is romantic yet fiercely independent.

The graceful faux pearls are elegantly graduated from small (10mm) to large (20mm). The necklace is approximately 49" long, with 17" of beaded length and two 16" ties. It ties at the nape of the neck in a wispy bow. Retying adjusts the length from medium to long to fit a different neckline.

Basil Strawberry Peach Red Bush Iced Tea/Lemonade

Ok, so my Basil came back to life after the desert heat almost killed it a couple of weeks ago. So since this weekend was so HOT and I had a bunch of strawberries and some new Adagio Teas and one bottle of Vitamin water Zero water left. I decided to make some sun tea.

It was AMAZING!!! Because it was over 100 degrees the sun tea was ready pretty fast and then I put it in the freezer to cool it down pretty fast and then just added my ice and yum yum it was.

Intricate, complex, fragile, resilient, coarse, smooth, bold and delicate – leaves are the true inspiration for all of my creations.

"My name is Lotta Helleberg, and I am a Swedish native and graphic designer with a passionate interest in botany, gardening and sewing, who founded my design studio Inleaf in 2003. My endeavor is truly a labor of love, from the first inspirational idea through the many steps that are attentively completed before the finished product is presented.

Luxurious natural fabrics are washed and dyed with eco friendly fiber reactive dyes, non-toxic paints are blended to just that perfect shade, and the leaves are collected and cleaned. Then comes the printing - the most exhilarating part of the process - where the leaves, compliant and faithful, help me create magical imagery by serving as ever-changing printing plates. After steaming the fabric, to make the paint colorfast, the construction takes part in my studio, where threads and vintage linings are equally carefully considered.

The result is a collection of lovely objects that brings the deceivingly simple beauty of nature into everyday life. Each piece is meant to be used, shared, and cherished. Enjoy!

Coppeneur Chocolates are here @Botany's Desire...

Coppeneur has created premium, innovative and award winning chocolate products since 1993.

Recently Coppeneur became the first micro-batch bean-to-bar chocolate maker in Germany. On their first journey to locate a plantation growing high quality cocoa beans, Georg and Oliver traveled to areas near the Amazon. Their journey eventually led to cocoa plantations in the Los Rios Valley of Ecuador and then finally to the organic certified plantation, Hacienda Iara, which cultivates the rare Nacional Arriba bean.

Other superior quality plantations were discovered including “Tabuna” in Papua New Guinea, "Menavava" in Madagascar (organic), "Uba Budo" in Sao Tome et Principe and "Buena Vista" in Dominican Republic (organic). Coppeneur also creates regional “Single Origin” chocolate made with beans sourced from Trinidad, Jamaica, Grenada, the Java region of Indonesia and the Ocumare Valley of of Venezuela.

Coppeneur also creates limited edition chocolate when very rare exceptional quality harvests of cocoa beans are discovered. In 2008, two sources of rare Porcelana cocoa beans, one from Venezuela and the other from Mexico were found. Only 950 bars from each source were created. On "a-soon-to-be-on-line" chocolate rating web site called the "C-Spot", our Venezuelan Porcelana bar is rated the #1 bar in the world, just slightly ahead of the Italian brand of chocolate that usually earns the #1 spot. Another discovery was made in Peru when a very small harvest of Porcelana beans became available and most recently Coppeneur purchased a single ton of cocoa beans from the famous "Chuao Valley" in Venezuela.

Coppeneur then pushed the boundaries further by becoming an organic cocoa grower. Amid ylang ylang, lychee, mango, black pepper and vanilla, Coppeneur found a wonderfully fertile piece of land shielded by trees on a small hill located on "Nosy Be", a volcanic island off the northwest coast of Madagascar. Organic Criollo and Trinitario seeds from the freshest fruit of the best cocoa plantations in the Sambirano Valley were planted. Our first cocoa crop is expected in 2011.

At regular intervals, Georg and Oliver travel to the cocoa growing regions of the world in search of the best cocoa beans and to visit plantation "Nosy Be" in Madagascar.
